Viewed from below, the occipital bone occupies the posterior cranial base as an opaque highlight against a transparent cranium. The foramen magnum dominates the midline, bordered anterolaterally by the occipital condyles, which sit inferior to the squamous part of the occiput and articulate with the superior articular facets of the atlas (C1). Just caudal to the cranial base, the atlas appears as a ring with anterior and posterior arches aligned beneath the foramen magnum. The mandible and dentition remain visible anteriorly through the stylized X-ray treatment. An inferior occipital view is the cleanest way to teach and assess the craniovertebral junction, where small shifts in alignment matter. The occipital condyles and anterior margin of the foramen magnum anchor discussion of atlanto-occipital biomechanics and the hypoglossal canal region, and they provide the bony reference points used when evaluating basilar invagination and atlanto-occipital dissociation after high-energy trauma. One glance establishes whether C1 sits concentrically under the occipital condyles. That matters.
