Description
Occipital bone anatomy is presented from an inferior (basal) perspective of the male skull, centered on the foramen magnum and its surrounding landmarks. Flanking the foramen magnum on the right and left, the occipital condyles project inferiorly to articulate with the superior articular facets of the atlas (C1), while the basilar part of the occipital bone lies anterior to the foramen magnum and the squamous part extends posteriorly toward the external occipital region. Laterally, the condylar fossae and the external openings of the hypoglossal canals sit in close relationship to the condylar bases, with the jugular notch region approaching the petrous temporal bone at the occipitomastoid suture line. Basal occipital anatomy matters because it defines the craniovertebral junction. A clear view of the foramen magnum margin and condylar contours helps when discussing Chiari I malformation and posterior fossa decompression, where bone removal may extend to the rim of the foramen magnum and sometimes involves limited drilling near the condyles to avoid postoperative craniocervical instability. It also supports teaching around occipital condyle fractures after axial loading injuries and the proximity of the hypoglossal canal, where lower cranial nerve deficits can accompany fractures or metastatic lesions.
