Description
Oriented in a lateral to inferolateral projection, the male cranium is rendered to emphasize the occipital bone at the posterior cranial base, including the foramen magnum and the paired occipital condyles on its anterolateral margins. A fracture line tracks across the occipital bone and traverses the condylar region, where the condyles articulate inferiorly with the superior articular facets of the atlas (C1) at the atlanto-occipital joints. Surrounding landmarks expected in this view include the mastoid part of the temporal bone laterally, the lambdoid suture superiorly where occipital meets parietal, and the posterior dental arcade and mandible anteriorly for orientation. Sutural contours are visible. A critical landmark. Occipital condyle fractures sit at the intersection of skull base trauma and craniocervical stability, and they can be missed without a deliberate look at the craniovertebral junction on CT. Because the hypoglossal canal lies immediately superior to each condyle and the jugular foramen is just lateral, a condylar fracture raises focused questions about lower cranial nerve deficits (tongue deviation, dysphagia, hoarseness) and venous or carotid-adjacent injury patterns depending on extension into the petro-occipital region. Clinically, the pattern also informs immobilization strategy and whether occipitocervical fusion enters the discussion in cases with associated atlanto-occipital instability or ligamentous disruption. Use this illustration to support teaching on the occipital bone and cranial base in gross anatomy, to accompany radiology content on basilar skull fracture patterns and reporting checklists, or to clarify operative and forensic discussions of posterior fossa trauma and craniocervical junction injury mechanisms.
