Description
Viewed from the lateral aspect of an adult male face, the risorius is isolated as a thin, horizontal muscle band within the superficial cheek, extending anteriorly toward the modiolus at the corner of the mouth. Posteriorly, its fibers arise from the parotid-masseteric fascia overlying the parotid gland region and adjacent masseter, placing it superficial to the buccinator and anterior to the external ear. Deep bony context includes the maxilla superiorly and the mandible inferiorly, with the mandibular body and dentition in profile; the cervical vertebrae appear posterior-inferior as a positional reference. Fine facial soft tissues frame the oral fissure and nasal cavity. Risorius anatomy matters because it sits at a surgical and procedural crossroads: it traverses the same superficial plane where the buccal branches of the facial nerve (CN VII) and the facial artery and vein course across the cheek toward the angle of the mouth, making it a practical landmark when teaching safe injection technique and facial dissection planes. A short muscle. Yet injury or denervation can produce an asymmetric smile by altering lateral traction at the modiolus, and parotid or masseter region incisions can disrupt its fascial origin or neighboring neurovascular structures. Use this lateral perspective for head and neck anatomy labs, dental and oral surgery teaching, and facial expression modules that contrast risorius with the zygomaticus major and depressor anguli oris during perioral movement. It also reads well in clinical atlases discussing parotidectomy approaches, buccal branch vulnerability, and planning of cosmetic procedures around the nasolabial fold and oral commissure.
