Description
Arising from the fascia over the parotid and masseteric region, the risorius runs anteromedially as a slender band across the cheek to blend with the modiolus at the lateral angle of the mouth. The anterior perspective also places it superficial to the mandible and maxilla, with the zygomatic arch and maxillary dentition providing clear bony reference points. Medially, the nasal aperture and anterior maxilla orient the midface, while inferiorly the mandibular body frames the perioral musculature. The cervical vertebrae sit posterior and inferior to the skull base, with clavicles and upper ribs faintly establishing the neck and thoracic inlet. Facial expression anatomy gets confusing fast, and the risorius is a common culprit because it is small, variable, and easily conflated with the zygomaticus major or platysma slips. This anterior view clarifies its lateral-to-medial course toward the modiolus, a surgical landmark where multiple muscles converge and where tension vectors matter in smile dynamics.
