Description

Running transversely across the superficial cheek, the risorius is presented in anterior view as a thin, strap-like muscle arising from the fascia overlying the parotid and masseteric region and coursing medially toward the modiolus at the oral commissure. Lateral to it, the zygomaticus major is visible descending obliquely from the zygomatic bone to the corner of the mouth, while the maxilla and mandible provide fixed bony reference points superiorly and inferiorly. Dentition and the nasal aperture anchor midline orientation, and the upper cervical vertebrae appear inferior to the occipital region. A small muscle with a specific job.
