Description
Arising from the parotid and masseteric fascia over the lateral cheek, the risorius forms a slender, superficial band that runs anteriorly and slightly inferiorly toward the modiolus at the angle of the mouth. A lateral skull view frames the muscle against the zygomatic arch, maxilla, and mandible, with the temporomandibular joint positioned posterior to the oral commissure and the orbit superior to the midface. Inferiorly, the cervical vertebrae align beneath the occiput, providing regional orientation for the head and neck. Superficial placement is the point. Functionally, risorius retracts the oral commissure laterally, contributing to the grimace and the “laughing” expression when acting with zygomaticus major and minor, while opposing fibers of orbicularis oris and depressor anguli oris refine the lip shape. This lateral perspective helps clarify why the muscle’s action differs from the more obliquely oriented zygomaticus major, which elevates the angle of the mouth as it courses from the zygomatic bone. Clinically, that distinction matters when mapping facial expression deficits after facial nerve (CN VII) injury, and when planning botulinum toxin placement for asymmetric smile or perioral dystonia to avoid unwanted oral commissure drift. Facial anatomy and head and neck courses can use this plate to teach the relationship of superficial mimetic muscles to fixed bony landmarks, and to reinforce the concept of the modiolus as a convergence point rather than a discrete tendon insertion.
