Description
Seen in lateral profile, the globe is sectioned to expose the posterior sclera and the vascular tunic, with the choroid lining the inner surface of the sclera and the retina lying immediately internal to it. Short posterior ciliary arteries pierce the sclera around the optic nerve (nervus opticus) and then course anteriorly within the suprachoroidal space toward the posterior pole. Their entry points cluster circumferentially around the optic disc, just lateral and medial to the optic nerve sheath depending on the cut plane. Fine accompanying venous channels may be suggested within the choroid as part of the broader vascular network. Attention to the short posterior ciliary arteries is not academic, these vessels supply the choroid and the prelaminar and laminar portions of the optic nerve head through the circle of Zinn-Haller. That relationship underpins common teaching around anterior ischemic optic neuropathy and explains why compromised perfusion in the posterior ciliary circulation can produce sectoral disc edema and altitudinal field loss. It also matters intraoperatively, since these arteries are at risk during posterior scleral manipulation and deep orbital dissection near the optic nerve. Ophthalmology and neuroanatomy instructors can drop this lateral cross-sectional view into lectures on the vascular supply of the retina versus choroid, or into surgical anatomy modules that orient trainees to the posterior pole, optic disc, and peripapillary scleral perforations. It also fits cleanly into review articles and patient-facing educational materials discussing optic nerve head ischemia, choroidal circulation, and vascular contributions to glaucomatous susceptibility.
