Description
Seen in lateral profile, the T8 vertebra is oriented with the vertebral body anteriorly and the vertebral arch posteriorly, the pedicle forming a stout bridge between them before it expands into the lamina. From the lamina, the spinous process projects posteriorly and inferiorly, while the transverse process extends laterally from the pedicle lamina junction. Superior and inferior articular processes sit posterior to the pedicle, their facet surfaces shown with an articular cartilage cap, and the vertebral foramen lies medial to the pedicle as the bony ring closes. A lateral view at mid thoracic level clarifies why thoracic vertebrae behave differently from cervical and lumbar segments: the long, caudally angled spinous process and the coronal orientation of the zygapophysial (facet) joints bias motion toward rotation and limit flexion extension. That matters when teaching thoracic kyphosis mechanics and when interpreting pain patterns from facet arthropathy, where loading in extension can reproduce local paraspinal pain without a classic radicular distribution. The pedicle lamina junction is also a key landmark for instrumentation, since thoracic pedicle screw trajectories depend on recognizing the posterior elements in profile and appreciating the narrow canal tolerance at this level. Bone landmarks matter.
