Description
Presented in lateral profile, the buccal lymphatic vessels and small nodal stations course over the lateral maxilla and mandible, tracking the cheek region superficial to the buccinator and other facial muscles that have been removed for clarity. Anteriorly, channels from the nasal vestibule and upper lip region run posteriorly toward the buccal space, then angle inferiorly to join pathways descending along the body of the mandible toward the upper cervical chain. Behind them, the bony framework is explicit, including the frontal, parietal, and temporal bones, zygomatic arch, maxilla, mandibular body and ramus, plus the dental arches in occlusion. Cervical vertebrae sit inferiorly as a positional reference for the neck segment of drainage. Buccal lymphatics matter because cheek infections and oral cavity malignancies often spread along predictable drainage routes that bypass the more obvious submandibular basin. A small but clinically real example is buccal space infection from maxillary molars or periapical disease, where tenderness can localize along facial lymphatic channels before deeper cervical nodes enlarge. Surgeons and radiologists also use these relationships when planning incision placement, assessing metastatic patterns from lip and anterior oral lesions, or correlating palpable cheek nodules with reactive lymph nodes rather than salivary or cutaneous masses.
