Description
Seen from the lateral aspect in an adult male, the rectum continues inferiorly into the anal canal, with the external anal sphincter and surrounding ischioanal (ischiorectal) fat implied by the semi-transparent soft tissues. Blue venous channels track along the distal rectum and converge as the inferior rectal veins, receiving tributaries from the external rectal venous plexus around the anal verge. Small yellow nodal structures sit in the perirectal soft tissue, consistent with pararectal lymph nodes that parallel the venous drainage pathways. Emphasis on the inferior rectal veins matters because this is the systemic outflow from the anal canal below the pectinate line, coursing through the ischioanal fossa to the internal pudendal vein and then the internal iliac system.
