Description
Lateral cervical anatomy is presented with the longissimus capitis highlighted deep to the splenius capitis, both lying posterior to the cervical vertebrae and ascending toward the occipital region. From this side-on perspective, the longissimus capitis can be followed superiorly as it courses from the transverse processes of upper thoracic and lower cervical vertebrae to insert on the mastoid process of the temporal bone, positioned medial and slightly anterior to the more superficial splenius capitis fibers. Superficial skin and subcutaneous tissue form the outer contour, while the posterior midline elements of the cervical spine sit medial to the muscle mass and guide level orientation. Clear layering is the point. Clinically, this relationship matters when you are trying to distinguish superficial posterior neck pain generators from deeper erector spinae contributors in patients with whiplash-associated disorder or persistent cervicogenic headache. Longissimus capitis trigger points often refer pain toward the mastoid and temporal region, and their depth beneath splenius capitis helps explain why palpation and dry needling require precise angle and depth control.
