Description
Running along the lateral aspect of the distal femur, the superior lateral genicular vein is shown coursing posterior to the lateral femoral epicondyle before turning toward the popliteal fossa to join the periarticular venous network. Nearby venules and larger companion veins form clear anastomoses around the superolateral margin of the knee, paralleling the expected course of the superior lateral genicular artery. Adjacent soft tissues include the distal vastus lateralis and the posterolateral hamstring mass, with the iliotibial tract lying superficially and the biceps femoris tendon approaching the fibular head inferiorly. Bony landmarks such as the lateral femoral condyle, proximal tibia, and patella orient the relationships. Small but clinically real. A lateral perspective on the genicular venous system matters because the peripatellar and periarticular veins are common sources of persistent oozing during lateral approaches to the knee, including exposure for distal femoral fixation or lateral retinacular procedures. The superior lateral genicular vein also participates in collateral drainage when the popliteal vein is compressed or thrombosed, and its anastomoses help explain why superficial bruising can track around the lateral joint line after trauma. The vessel’s proximity to the lateral collateral ligament complex and the bony contour of the lateral femoral condyle makes it a useful landmark when teaching the layered anatomy of the posterolateral corner.
