Description
Positioned along the posterolateral aspect of the distal femur, the superior lateral genicular vein courses proximal to the lateral femoral condyle and tracks with its arterial counterpart toward the popliteal fossa. From this posterior perspective, it sits deep to the biceps femoris tendon and lateral head of gastrocnemius, then turns medially to join the popliteal venous trunk posterior to the knee joint capsule. Small venules and anastomotic channels link it to the periarticular genicular network around the lateral femoral epicondyle and the superior margin of the tibiofibular region. Relative to the popliteal vessels, the genicular tributary enters laterally and superiorly. A clean posterior map. Venous anatomy at the knee matters when operative corridors or trauma expose the popliteal fossa, because short genicular tributaries can avulse and retract, producing brisk bleeding that is awkward to control in a deep field. This view aligns with the structures encountered during posterior approaches to the knee, lateral meniscal root work with posterolateral corner reconstruction, or exploration after knee dislocation where popliteal vessel injury is a concern. The superior lateral genicular vein also helps explain how periarticular venous drainage persists when more proximal channels are compromised, and where collateral flow may develop around chronic popliteal venous obstruction. Use this plate in gross anatomy teaching on the popliteal fossa and genicular anastomosis, in operative anatomy manuals covering posterior and posterolateral knee exposures, or in vascular and orthopedic education discussing iatrogenic bleeding points near the lateral femoral condyle. It also fits radiology teaching sets that correlate periarticular vessels with contrast-enhanced MR or CT around the knee. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
