Description

Running along the medial aspect of the distal femur, the descending genicular vein tracks proximally in the subsartorial region, just anterior to the adductor magnus tendon and posterior to the vastus medialis. Inferiorly, its tributaries communicate with the venous plexus around the medial knee, near the medial femoral condyle and along the proximal medial tibia. Femur, tibia, and patella frame the joint, with articular cartilage capping the femoral and tibial surfaces. Blue venous channels dominate the field. Medial knee venous anatomy matters in a way arterial diagrams do not, because superficial and deep venous pathways here become surgical landmarks and common sources of bleeding. During medial approaches for total knee arthroplasty, medial patellofemoral ligament work, or exposure around the medial femoral condyle, injury to the descending genicular vein or its genicular connections can complicate dissection and obscure tissue planes. Clear identification also supports discussions of collateral flow across the genicular network when the superficial femoral or popliteal segments are compromised. Small vessel, big consequences. Use this plate in lower limb anatomy teaching to tie the adductor canal region to the periarticular genicular plexus, and in operative atlases that describe medial parapatellar or subvastus approaches where the vastus medialis and subsartorial plane set the corridor. It also fits vascular lectures and clinical handouts on peri-knee venous drainage, perforator mapping, and postoperative hematoma risk around the medial joint line. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
