Description
Arising from the medial aspect of the posterior knee, the inferior medial genicular vein tracks proximally along the tibial condyle and posteromedial joint line toward the popliteal fossa. Its small venules form a periarticular network adjacent to the capsule and the posterior horn region of the medial meniscus, then converge into larger channels that lie superficial to the posterior tibia and deep to the subcutaneous tissues. Proximally, the vessel courses toward the popliteal vein, with the distal femur superior and the proximal tibia inferior framing the field, and the patella situated anterior to the joint space. Posterior venous anatomy around the knee matters when you are mapping sources of bleeding and routes of venous drainage during posteromedial approaches, arthroscopy portals near the medial gutter, or open procedures addressing meniscal root tears and tibial plateau fractures. Small genicular veins can be injured during dissection in the popliteal fossa and may retract into the periarticular fat, making hemostasis less straightforward than expected. A clean posterior view also supports teaching of why knee effusions and synovitis can produce engorged periarticular venous channels, and how that pattern differs from true deep venous thrombosis involving the popliteal vein. Orthopedic anatomy courses and surgical atlases can pair this plate with depictions of the genicular arterial anastomosis to reinforce artery vein relationships at the knee.
