Description
Angled from the medial side of a male knee, the inferior medial genicular artery courses anterior to the medial tibial condyle and just inferior to the medial femoral condyle, skirting the joint line as it contributes to the periarticular genicular anastomosis. Articular cartilage caps the distal femur and proximal tibia, with the femorotibial articulation shown in profile and the tibial plateau forming the inferior bony margin. Small accompanying vessels are suggested, with venous channels (blue) tracking near the arterial path (red) along the medial joint capsule. Proximal structures remain superior at the distal femur, while the vessel’s distal run hugs the proximal tibia. Medial genicular branches matter because they keep the synovium, capsule, and subchondral bone perfused when primary inflow from the popliteal artery is compromised by flexion, compression, or surgical manipulation. The inferior medial genicular artery is also a familiar bleeder during medial arthrotomy, meniscal repair, and exposure around the medial tibial plateau, where capsular releases and suture passage can intersect its periosteal and capsular branches. A small artery, but it makes itself known.
