Description
Arising from the popliteal artery near the inferior margin of the popliteus, the inferior medial genicular artery courses anteriorly and medially toward the knee, hugging the proximal tibia and the medial joint line. From an anterior perspective, its path can be followed as it passes deep to the semimembranosus tendon and skirts the medial tibial condyle, where it contributes to the periarticular genicular anastomosis. Portions of the distal femur, proximal tibia, and patella frame the vessel, with capsular and ligamentous bands indicated around the joint space. Small arterial branches radiate toward the medial capsule and infrapatellar region. This artery matters because it is one of the key medial contributors to patellar and capsular perfusion, and it can be injured during medial approaches to the knee, including arthrotomy, high tibial osteotomy, and hamstring tendon harvest. Medial meniscal repair and MCL-related procedures also traverse the same neighborhood, where the vessel sits close to the medial tibial plateau and posteromedial capsule. Bleeding here is often underestimated. The anterior view clarifies why careful dissection deep to semimembranosus and along the pes anserinus region can prevent iatrogenic vascular injury.
