Presented from a posterior perspective, the femoral artery is tracked along the thigh as it passes deep to the adductor magnus and enters the popliteal fossa through the adductor hiatus, where it continues as the popliteal artery posterior to the knee joint. Proximally, the vessel aligns with the femur and pelvis, while distally it courses toward the tibia and fibula as the leg narrows. Superficial venous pathways are contrasted in blue, with the great saphenous vein running along the medial aspect of the limb despite the posterior viewing angle. Clear bony landmarks remain readable throughout. Posterior viewing matters because the femoral artery is clinically encountered as much for what you cannot see from the front as for its palpable pulse in the femoral triangle. Transition at the adductor hiatus is a common teaching point when explaining why distal pulses change with popliteal artery disease, and it frames how atherosclerotic occlusion, popliteal entrapment, or posterior knee trauma can compromise below-knee perfusion even when proximal flow appears preserved. It also clarifies why posterior approaches around the knee must respect the popliteal neurovascular bundle and why tourniquet placement and compartment anatomy affect arterial inflow.
