Description
Seen from a posterior perspective through an x-ray style torso, the gallbladder sits on the visceral (inferior) surface of the right lobe of the liver, tucked deep to the right costal margin and just lateral to the vertebral column. Its fundus projects anteroinferiorly toward the abdominal wall, while the neck turns medially to continue as the cystic duct, which joins the common hepatic duct to form the common bile duct. Proximal extrahepatic biliary branches are traced superior to the gallbladder, with the ribs and thoracic vertebrae providing a fixed posterior scaffold for orientation. Spatial relationships read cleanly. Posterior views are underused for biliary anatomy, yet they map well to what you correlate on fluoroscopy and cross sectional imaging when following the extrahepatic biliary tree from the hepatic hilum down toward the head of the pancreas. Gallstones often lodge in the gallbladder neck or cystic duct, and obstruction there produces biliary colic and can progress to acute cholecystitis, a pattern that becomes easier to explain when the neck, cystic duct, and common hepatic duct are seen in continuity. Calot triangle teaching also benefits from this angle because you can mentally place the cystic artery (not shown) crossing to the gallbladder neck while keeping the common bile duct medial and inferior. Clean landmarks. Use this asset in hepatobiliary anatomy modules, surgical clerkship teaching on laparoscopic cholecystectomy orientation, or as a figure in radiology and gastroenterology texts discussing biliary obstruction and cholangiography.
