Description
Positioned in the right upper abdomen, the gallbladder lies inferior to the liver’s visceral surface and to the right of the pancreatic head, its neck tapering medially into the cystic duct. The cystic duct joins the common hepatic duct to form the common bile duct, which descends posterior to the first part of the duodenum and then courses within or along the head of the pancreas before entering the second (descending) part of the duodenum at the major duodenal papilla. Curving in a C-shape, the duodenum embraces the pancreatic head, while the pancreatic body extends transversely leftward, anterior to the vertebral column and posterior to the stomach. An x-ray style semi-transparent ribcage and thoracic spine provide bony landmarks for depth and orientation. Clear topography. This anterior perspective matters because it frames the classic biliary-pancreatic junction where obstructive disease declares itself. A gallstone lodged in the distal common bile duct or at the ampulla of Vater can produce conjugated jaundice and trigger gallstone pancreatitis, and this layout helps you understand why pain may radiate to the back as the retroperitoneal pancreas becomes inflamed.
