Description
Oriented in a posterior perspective of the upper abdomen, the illustration places the liver superiorly with its posterior (visceral) surface facing the viewer, while the gallbladder (vesica biliaris) sits on the inferior aspect of the right lobe, tucked against the hepatic bed. Inferior to the liver, the pancreas spans transversely across the posterior abdominal wall, with its head cradled by the C-shaped duodenum and its body extending leftward toward the splenic direction. The duodenum curves from superior to inferior around the pancreatic head, with the descending portion positioned to the right and the horizontal portion crossing more medially. Spatial relationships read cleanly. Posterior views like this are where the hepatopancreatic region makes anatomical sense, because you can track how bile and pancreatic secretions reach the second part of the duodenum via the hepatopancreatic ampulla (ampulla of Vater) and how close that junction lies to the pancreatic head. That proximity underlies clinical patterns you see in practice: carcinoma of the pancreatic head can obstruct the distal common bile duct, producing painless jaundice and a distended gallbladder (Courvoisier sign), while gallstones impacted at the ampulla can trigger gallstone pancreatitis. It is a tight neighborhood.
