Description
Oriented from a posterior perspective, the right colic artery is traced as a branch of the superior mesenteric artery coursing toward the right colon, running within the mesocolon and approaching the ascending colon and the hepatic flexure. Along its course, the vessel gives colic branches that arborize over the colonic wall, then anastomose medially with the middle colic territory and inferiorly with the ileocolic branches, forming part of the marginal artery near the mesenteric border. The ascending colon lies lateral to the arterial pedicle, while the root of the mesentery and retroperitoneal posterior abdominal wall provide the deep background. Haustrations and epiploic appendages mark the external surface anatomy of the large intestine. Clear landmarks. Surgical and endovascular relevance drives interest in this viewpoint because the right colic artery shows marked anatomic variability, including absence, a shared trunk with the ileocolic artery, or an origin from the middle colic artery, all of which influence lymphadenectomy and vessel ligation during right hemicolectomy. Posterior orientation mirrors the dissection plane used when mobilizing the right colon off Toldt’s fascia, where the vascular pedicle is encountered deep to the mesocolon and close to retroperitoneal structures. Appreciating the anastomotic pathways also helps explain ischemic risk at watershed areas when mesenteric flow is compromised. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and GI surgery teaching to pair mesenteric arterial maps with the segmental morphology of the colon, including haustra and epiploic appendages, or in operative atlases describing oncologic right colectomy and complete mesocolic excision. It also suits journal figures on colonic perfusion, collateral circulation, and anatomic variants of SMA branching. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
