Description
Arising from the cervical plexus at C3 to C4, the supraclavicular nerve is traced as it emerges along the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid and descends inferolaterally toward the clavicle. From a posterior perspective, its medial, intermediate, and lateral supraclavicular branches can be followed as they cross the superior shoulder girdle, distributing cutaneous fibers over the clavicular region and the upper pectoral and deltoid skin. Posterior bony landmarks frame the course: the occipital bone superiorly, cervical spinous processes in the midline, the scapular spines laterally, and the lateral clavicles anterosuperior to the shoulder. Color-coded peripheral nerve pathways extend into the neck and upper back. This angle matters when you need to teach the relationship between superficial cervical sensory nerves and the bony corridor of the thoracic inlet and shoulder girdle. Supraclavicular nerve injury or entrapment is a recognized cause of postoperative numbness or neuropathic pain after clavicle fracture fixation, acromioclavicular procedures, and transverse cervical incisions, and a posterior overview helps clarify why symptoms can radiate over the clavicle and lateral shoulder despite a purely cutaneous nerve.
