Description
Running superiorly along the transverse foramina of the cervical vertebrae, the vertebral arteries are positioned anterolateral to the spinous processes and medial to the posterior cervical musculature that would normally overlie them. Posterior venous channels in the upper neck and occipital region course superficially relative to the vertebral column, converging toward the suboccipital area near the posterior arch of the atlas and the base of the skull. Deep to these vessels, the cervical spinal cord and segmental spinal nerves would align with the vertebral canal and intervertebral foramina. Orientation is unambiguous. This is a posterior head and neck vascular map anchored to the cervical spine. Posterior vascular anatomy matters most when you need to think in three dimensions around bone.
