Description

Seen from a posterior perspective, the upper limb skeleton includes the scapula with the glenoid cavity articulating laterally with the head of the humerus, while the clavicle may be partially present superior and anterior to the scapular spine. Distally, the humeral shaft widens into the distal humerus where the olecranon fossa sits on the posterior surface, just proximal to the trochlea and capitulum. Inferior to that, the ulna lies medially with the olecranon and trochlear notch receiving the humerus, and the radius runs more lateral, continuing to the carpal bones at the wrist and on into the metacarpals and phalanges. Posterior osseous anatomy at the elbow matters because it frames both motion and injury patterns: the olecranon process guides extension, and the olecranon fossa accommodates it at terminal extension, so osteophytes or loose bodies here can produce a mechanical block in valgus extension overload (common in overhead throwers). Fracture lines and fixation planning also depend on this orientation, since the distal humerus columns, the proximal ulna (including the coronoid-olecranon complex), and the radial head alignment determine elbow stability after trauma.
