Description
Centered on the distal femur in posterior view, the medial and lateral femoral condyles flank the intercondylar fossa (intercondylar notch), with the condylar articular surfaces wrapping inferiorly toward the tibial plateau. Along the margins of both condyles, irregular osteophytes project posteriorly and laterally, while patchy areas of exposed subchondral bone interrupt the expected smooth cartilage sheen. Superior to the notch, the roof and walls of the intercondylar fossa define the region where the cruciate ligaments normally course, even if the soft tissues are not included. Osteoarthritic change is often discussed in anteroposterior radiographs, but the posterior distal femur matters when you are teaching where pain and mechanical symptoms come from: cartilage loss concentrates load, then the subchondral plate hardens and fissures while marginal osteophytes encroach on capsular reflections. Roughening around the intercondylar notch also intersects with concepts of notch morphology and cruciate constraint, and it provides a direct visual bridge to arthroscopic findings such as fibrillated cartilage, eburnation, and posterior condylar wear that can limit extension. Not subtle. Use this illustration in musculoskeletal anatomy and pathology lectures to contrast normal femoral condylar contours with degenerative remodeling, or in orthopedic and rheumatology materials explaining why osteoarthritis produces crepitus, stiffness, and loss of joint congruence at the knee.
