Seen from the posterior aspect of a male knee, the oblique popliteal ligament spans the back of the joint capsule as a broad, obliquely oriented band sweeping superolaterally from the posteromedial tibia toward the lateral femoral condyle. The distal femur sits superior to the tibial plateau, with the intercondylar region lying deep to the posterior capsule, while the patella remains anterior and is only implied by the overall alignment. Articular cartilage caps the femoral condyles and tibial surfaces, and the fibula is expected laterally at the proximal leg even if it is not emphasized in this model. Functionally, the oblique popliteal ligament represents the reflected expansion of the semimembranosus tendon and forms a stout posterior reinforcement that checks knee hyperextension and posterior capsular gapping.
