Description

Anteriorly, the patella sits embedded in the quadriceps femoris tendon, with the patellar ligament (ligamentum patellae) continuing inferiorly from the patellar apex to insert on the tibial tuberosity. Superior to the tibia, the distal femur forms the medial and lateral condyles, their articular cartilage capping the anterior aspects that articulate with the posterior patellar facets. Medial and lateral to the ligament, the retinacula patellae blend with the joint capsule and frame the infrapatellar region. Clean midline anatomy. Because the patellar ligament is the direct continuation of the knee extensor mechanism, this anterior view is the one clinicians use to explain why a patellar tendon rupture produces patella alta and loss of active extension, while a quadriceps tendon rupture tends toward patella baja.
