Description
Posterior forearm anatomy is presented with the posterior interosseous veins coursing in the deep extensor compartment along the interosseous membrane between the radius and ulna. Proximally, these venae comitantes accompany the posterior interosseous artery and lie deep to extensor digitorum and extensor carpi ulnaris, then track distally toward the dorsal wrist where they communicate with the dorsal venous network. More superficial channels consistent with the cephalic and basilic venous territories can be appreciated through a translucent integument, framing the deep system from the dorsum of the hand to the upper arm. Deep, blue-caliber vessels remain the emphasis. Understanding the posterior interosseous veins matters when you need to teach or plan around the deep drainage of the posterior forearm, which does not behave like the easy-to-palpate superficial veins used for routine venipuncture. Their position adjacent to the interosseous membrane and extensor musculature makes them relevant in posterior compartment trauma and forearm fasciotomy planning, where bleeding from deep venae comitantes can complicate exposure. The relationship to the dorsal venous network also helps explain patterns of edema and venous return after dorsal wrist incisions or extensor tendon surgery. A deep pathway.
