Description
Arising from the anterior aspect of the abdominal aorta just inferior to the celiac trunk, the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) is traced from a posterior perspective as it courses inferiorly behind the pancreas and anterior to the third part of the duodenum before entering the root of the mesentery. Jejunal and ileal branches radiate laterally within the mesentery toward the coiled small intestine, while more proximal colic branches sweep toward the right colon, transverse colon, and proximal descending colon. Venous counterparts in blue accompany the arterial tree, converging toward the superior mesenteric vein in the same mesenteric plane. A segment of liver is included superiorly as an orientation landmark within the upper abdomen. Posterior views of the SMA matter because the vessel’s relationship to the aorta, pancreas, and duodenum is where anatomy becomes pathology. Compression of the third part of the duodenum between the SMA and aorta underlies superior mesenteric artery syndrome, and the aortomesenteric angle is best conceptualized when you appreciate the artery’s takeoff and downward trajectory. The same corridor is central to duodenal mobilization and pancreatic head surgery, where inadvertent injury to proximal SMA branches can compromise extensive lengths of midgut. Use this artwork for teaching midgut vascular supply in gross anatomy, GI surgery modules, and radiology correlation when explaining mesenteric ischemia patterns, CT angiography planning, or the vascular arcades and vasa recta of jejunum versus ileum.
