Description
Seen from a posterior (dorsal) aspect, the paired laminae of the thyroid cartilage converge inferiorly while their inner surfaces form a deep concavity that would face the laryngeal cavity in situ. Superiorly, the elongated cornua (superior horns) project toward the hyoid bone, framing the expected course of the lateral thyrohyoid ligament. Inferior horns descend to the cricothyroid joints on the posterolateral margin of the cricoid cartilage, with the upper tracheal rings continuing inferiorly in the midline. Adjacent posterior laryngeal structures are logically present, including the arytenoid cartilages perched on the cricoid lamina and the interarytenoid region spanning between them. Posterior anatomy matters because it is where the mechanics of phonation become legible: arytenoid rotation and gliding at the cricoarytenoid joints tension and approximate the vocal folds, while the thyroid cartilage provides the anterior anchor for the vocal ligament and the cricothyroid relationship sets pitch. This view also aligns with operative and airway concerns, including laryngeal framework surgery and the assessment of trauma patterns at the cricothyroid joint and posterior laryngeal inlet. Male laryngeal morphology, including the more prominent thyroid angle that produces the Adam’s prominence anteriorly, correlates with differences in vocal fold length and typical pitch range.
