Description
Seen in lateral profile, the male thyroid cartilage forms the dominant anterior wall of the larynx, its two laminae meeting anteriorly to create the laryngeal prominence (Adam’s prominence) and sweeping posteriorly to the posterior border. A distinct oblique line crosses the lateral surface, with the superior horn (cornu superius) projecting superiorly toward the hyoid via the thyrohyoid membrane and the inferior horn (cornu inferius) turning inferiorly to articulate with the cricoid cartilage at the cricothyroid joint. Posterior to the thyroid lamina sit the arytenoid cartilages on the superior border of the cricoid, while the epiglottis rises superiorly and the tracheal rings continue inferiorly. Lateral anatomy of the thyroid cartilage matters because it frames the mechanics of pitch and airway protection in a way that an anterior view cannot: rotation at the cricothyroid joint lengthens and tenses the vocal folds, and the relationship between the superior horn and hyoid helps orient the supraglottic airway during swallowing. The oblique line is a practical landmark for the sternothyroid and thyrohyoid muscle attachments, structures often discussed when planning or interpreting laryngeal electromyography, and the male angle of the laminae explains the more prominent Adam’s prominence and palpable midline landmark.
