Description

Centered in the anterior neck, the male thyroid cartilage forms a broad lamina on each side that meets in the midline to create the laryngeal prominence (prominentia laryngea, Adam’s apple). Superiorly, the thyroid cartilage relates to the epiglottis and hyoid region through the thyrohyoid membrane, while inferiorly it overlaps the complete ring of the cricoid cartilage at the level of the cricothyroid joint. Red intrinsic laryngeal muscles are shown investing the cartilaginous framework, and the airway continues caudally as C shaped tracheal rings. Cartilage is the scaffold. This anterior laryngeal view matters because the thyroid cartilage is the key surface landmark for airway procedures and voice related surgery. The cricothyroid membrane, spanning between the inferior border of the thyroid cartilage and the superior arch of the cricoid, is the target for emergent cricothyrotomy and sits immediately inferior to the laryngeal prominence in most adult men. For teaching phonation mechanics, the relationships between thyroid cartilage position, cricoid alignment, and intrinsic muscle pull provide a clean setup for explaining how cricothyroid action increases vocal fold tension and why anterior neck trauma can present with dysphonia and airway compromise. Use this artwork for gross anatomy and head and neck modules, anesthesiology and emergency medicine airway training materials, and ENT publications covering laryngeal trauma, cricothyrotomy landmarks, or laryngeal framework surgery (including thyroplasty and thyroid chondroplasty). It also supports patient education on Adam’s apple anatomy and surgical planning discussions in voice clinics. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
