Description
Arising from the occipital scalp and posterior auricular region, superficial veins converge toward the nuchal midline and then descend over the posterior neck, where they relate closely to the external occipital protuberance and the upper cervical spinous processes. Deeper channels track alongside the cervical vertebrae as vertebral veins, communicating with the suboccipital venous plexus at the skull base and continuing inferiorly toward the thoracic inlet. Bony landmarks of the occiput, atlas, axis, and upper thoracic vertebrae provide a fixed frame for appreciating how these venous pathways course posterior to the pharynx and larynx, yet remain anterior to the skin and posterior cervical musculature in layered depth. Orientation is unambiguous. Posterior head and neck venous anatomy matters when you need to distinguish superficial scalp drainage from the valveless vertebral venous system, a route implicated in hematogenous spread of infection or metastasis to the cervical spine and posterior cranial fossa. This view also helps explain why posterior fossa and upper cervical venous pressures can change with posture or Valsalva, and why catheter or surgical manipulation near the transverse processes and intervertebral foramina demands respect for the vertebral veins and their plexiform connections. Spatial relationships here are what clinicians miss on axial images.
