Description
Mammary gland parenchyma fills this sagittal section of the female breast, with branching lactiferous ducts converging toward the nipple-areolar complex and expanding into lactiferous sinuses just deep to the areola. Glandular lobules sit posterior to the areola and are embedded within lobules of adipose tissue, which occupy the superficial and peripheral portions of the breast and help define its contour. Fibrous septa (Cooper ligaments) can be inferred as thin connective tissue partitions extending between skin and the deeper fascia, separating fat and gland as they course toward the anterior chest wall. Spatially, the ductal tree lies more anteriorly and centrally, while larger fat compartments dominate the superior, inferior, and lateral aspects of the section.
