Description
Palmar skin and superficial fascia open onto the thenar and hypothenar eminences, with the palmar aponeurosis spanning centrally over the flexor tendons as it sends longitudinal slips toward the proximal phalanges. Proximal to the metacarpus, the forearm flexor compartment continues distally, with tendons of flexor digitorum superficialis and profundus passing deep to the flexor retinaculum at the carpus and spreading into the digital rays, while flexor pollicis longus tracks to the thumb on the radial side. Yellow nerve branches course with the vessels, the median nerve lying centrally in the carpal tunnel and the ulnar nerve entering more medially through Guyon canal to supply the hypothenar region and ulnar digits. Palmar anatomy rewards this ventral perspective because it matches how clinicians approach the hand in examination and in surgery, where small positional errors can cost sensation or pinch strength. Median nerve compression in carpal tunnel syndrome targets the palmar digital branches to the thumb, index, middle, and radial half of the ring finger, and the illustration helps relate those sensory territories to the underlying flexor tendons and synovial sheaths. Ulnar neuropathy at the wrist is different, and seeing the ulnar artery and nerve on the ulnar side clarifies why Guyon canal lesions spare dorsal ulnar hand sensation but weaken interossei and adductor pollicis.
