Description
Centered at the junction of the frontal bone and paired nasal bones, the nasal radix (root of the nose) is presented in anterior view between the medial orbital margins. The nasion lies superior to the bony dorsum and inferior to the glabella, with the bridge transitioning inferiorly toward the cartilaginous dorsum and nasal tip; laterally, the upper lateral cartilages and alar sidewalls frame the nasal airway region. Surrounding facial landmarks include the supraorbital region superiorly and the medial canthi and lacrimal areas on either side. A blue transverse band across the bridge marks the measurement or area of focus. Accurate depiction of the radix matters in rhinoplasty planning and trauma assessment because small changes in dorsal height and nasofrontal angle can alter midface balance and perceived intercanthal spacing. This is also a key surface landmark in craniofacial anthropometry, where nasion-based measurements (for example, nasion to pronasale) help document baseline morphology and postoperative change, and in the evaluation of dorsal deviations after nasal bone fractures. Subtle soft-tissue thickness differences across skin tones and sex can influence how bony and cartilaginous contours read on inspection and in 3D simulation. Surface anatomy drives the plan.
