Description
Within a cross-sectional male kidney, the renal cortex forms a peripheral mantle around the medulla, where multiple renal pyramids project toward the renal sinus. Blue venous channels course from the corticomedullary region toward the hilum, converging into larger segmental and lobar tributaries that drain into the renal vein as it exits anterior to the renal artery. Between pyramids, renal columns extend medially from cortex to sinus, while the renal pelvis sits centrally and continues inferiorly as the ureter. Venous anatomy in section is more than color-coding, it clarifies how blood leaves the filtering parenchyma after passing the glomeruli and peritubular capillaries, and it anchors the relationship of vessels to the collecting system. This arrangement matters during partial nephrectomy and tumor resection planning, where a surgeon must anticipate venous branches near the corticomedullary junction and renal sinus to control bleeding while preserving functioning cortex. Variants and asymmetry are common. Even when the focus is the renal veins, seeing them against the pyramids and pelvis helps explain why hilar dissection is performed with attention to the typical anterior-to-posterior order of vein, artery, and pelvis.
