Description
Centered in an anterior thoracic view, the sternum is presented from the jugular notch of the manubrium superiorly down the midline to the xiphoid process at its inferior tip. The sternal body (gladiolus) lies inferior to the manubriosternal junction and superior to the xiphisternal joint, with the fractured xiphoid shown displaced or fissured along its cartilaginous element. Costal notches along the lateral margins imply the articulation sites for the costal cartilages, framing the sternum as the anterior anchor of the rib cage. Male surface proportions are consistent with a broader manubrium and longer sternal body. Xiphoid process fractures are uncommon but clinically specific, most often following direct epigastric impact, contact sports, or as a complication of vigorous cardiopulmonary resuscitation when compressions drift inferiorly. Pain at the xiphisternal region can mimic cardiac or upper abdominal pathology, and the anterior view helps clarify how a fractured, angulated xiphoid can irritate the rectus abdominis and linea alba attachments or, in severe displacement, threaten adjacent structures such as the left lobe of the liver and anterior diaphragm. Small structure. Big consequences. Educators can use this plate to teach sternal anatomy and its junctions in gross anatomy, thoracic trauma modules, and emergency medicine skills courses focused on CPR hand placement and complications. It also fits well in radiology and surgery publications when correlating anterior sternal landmarks with CT or plain film findings in suspected lower sternal injury.
