Seen in lateral profile, the sternum (breastbone) is oriented vertically in the anterior midline, with the manubrium positioned superiorly, the sternal body extending inferiorly, and the xiphoid process forming the distal taper. The sternal angle (angle of Louis) creates an anteriorly palpable ridge at the manubriosternal joint, while the xiphisternal junction sits inferior to it and often projects slightly anteriorly. Along the lateral margin, the costal notches for the costal cartilages are implied, with the upper notches closer to the manubrium and the lower series tracking down the body toward the xiphoid. A lateral sternum view matters because it clarifies the sagittal contour you palpate at the bedside and the bony relationships that guide access to the mediastinum.
