Description
Arising from the ulnar artery via the common interosseous trunk, the anterior interosseous artery is traced on the anterior aspect of the forearm as it descends on the volar surface of the interosseous membrane between the radius laterally and ulna medially. Proximally, the vessel lies deep to the flexor digitorum profundus and adjacent to the anterior interosseous nerve, then continues distally toward pronator quadratus near the distal radioulnar joint. Anterior skeletal landmarks include the humerus and forearm bones, with the radial and ulnar arteries running more superficially along their respective sides, and paired venae comitantes rendered in blue accompanying the arterial pathways. Understanding this deep course matters when you are teaching the forearm’s layered anatomy or planning approaches that traverse the volar compartment. The anterior interosseous artery can be encountered during volar plating for distal radius fractures and during exposure of the interosseous membrane, where it sits in a narrow interval that also contains the anterior interosseous nerve, a structure associated with anterior interosseous syndrome and vulnerable to traction and retraction. Its distal contribution to the dorsal carpal network also helps explain bleeding patterns around the wrist despite primarily anterior origin. Small vessel, high consequence.
