Description
Running along the anteromedial thigh, the femoral vein courses deep to the fascia lata and parallels the femoral artery from the adductor canal to the femoral triangle, where it lies medial to the artery before passing deep to the inguinal ligament to continue as the external iliac vein. Proximally, the great saphenous vein is shown joining at the saphenofemoral junction, while the deep femoral vein and muscular tributaries enter posterolaterally along the femur. Distally, the vessel narrows toward the knee as it transitions into the popliteal vein behind the joint line. Bones of the pelvis, femur, tibia, fibula, and the tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges provide fixed landmarks for the venous course. Clear orientation. An anterior perspective of the femoral vein matters because it aligns with the surface anatomy used for vascular access and for interpreting duplex ultrasound in suspected deep vein thrombosis, where thrombus commonly propagates across the femoral-popliteal segment. The relationship to the femoral artery and femoral canal is the teaching point, since inadvertent arterial puncture during femoral venipuncture and bleeding complications at the groin remain practical concerns.
