Seen from an anterior perspective, the lumbar vertebral column is centered with the rib cage superiorly and the pelvis inferiorly, framing the intertransversarii laterales lumborum as small, rectangular muscle slips bridging adjacent transverse processes from L1 through L5. Each slip sits lateral to the vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs, occupying the intertransverse space where the transverse processes project laterally from the lumbar vertebrae. Medially, the slips abut the base of the transverse processes near the pedicles, and laterally they approach the fascial plane shared with the quadratus lumborum, with the iliac crest and sacrum providing inferior bony context.
