Description
Running between adjacent lumbar transverse processes, the intertransversarii laterales lumborum are presented as paired, segmented slips lateral to the lumbar vertebral column in a posterior, subcutaneous view. Their fibers sit immediately medial to the quadratus lumborum sheet, with the more lateral margin approaching the posterior abdominal wall and the inferior border of the 12th rib superiorly. Midline landmarks include the spinous processes and laminae, while the ribs arc laterally above the lumbar region and the scapulae are faintly outlined superiorly through the translucent superficial tissues. Small muscles. Clear relationships. Appreciating these short intersegmental muscles matters when teaching lumbar segmental control and when interpreting posterior lumbar pain generators that do not localize cleanly to the erector spinae.
