Description
Seen from an anterior perspective, the superficial venous network of the male upper limb centers on the median cubital vein (often termed the medial cubital vein) as it crosses the antecubital fossa, running obliquely between the lateral cephalic vein and the medial basilic vein. Deep to this superficial channel, the humerus lies proximal to the elbow joint, with the radius lateral and the ulna medial in the forearm, establishing the bony landmarks that frame the cubital region. Red arterial pathways track alongside the skeleton, with the brachial artery coursing in the arm and continuing toward its forearm branches distal to the elbow. For venipuncture and peripheral IV access, this is the map clinicians rely on. The median cubital vein is often selected because it is relatively fixed by perforating veins and fascial connections, and it typically overlies the bicipital aponeurosis, a useful layer that helps separate the superficial vein from the deeper brachial artery and median nerve. Miss the plane, and you trade a clean draw for hematoma, arterial puncture, or neuropathic pain.
