Description
Across the anterior nose, the nasalis muscle is presented beneath the dermal layer, with its transverse part (compressor naris) spanning the dorsum and lateral nasal cartilages and its alar part sweeping inferiorly toward the alar cartilage at the nostril margin. Fibers lie superficial to the upper and lower lateral nasal cartilages and blend laterally with adjacent slips of levator labii superioris alaeque nasi and the facial musculature of the nasolabial region. Medially, the paired muscles approach the midline over the cartilaginous dorsum; inferiorly, their pull influences the contour of the nasal valve and alar rim. Skin texture and male facial features provide realistic surface context. Functionally, this view matters because the nasalis is the primary dynamic modulator of nasal aperture, compressing or dilating the nares during speech and respiration, and its balance with levator labii superioris alaeque nasi influences the external nasal valve. Small changes in these fibers can alter airflow. In rhinoplasty and functional nasal surgery, dissection near the scroll area and lateral crus risks denervating or tethering these superficial muscles, which can contribute to postoperative external valve collapse, asymmetry of nostril shape, or an unnatural smile-nose interaction.
