Description
Centered on the external nose in anterior view, the nasalis muscle is identified as a paired, superficial muscle spanning the nasal dorsum and ala, with fibers arranged into a transverse (compressor naris) component across the bridge and an alar component adjacent to the naris. Medially, the right and left slips approach the midline over the upper lateral nasal cartilages and nasal bones, while laterally they blend with the facial musculature over the nasolabial region. Inferiorly, the alar fibers sit just superior to the upper lip, near the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi and the margin of the orbicularis oris. Dentition is included beneath, placing the perioral muscles in clear relation to the maxillary and mandibular arches. Anterior orientation makes this a practical plate for teaching nasal valve mechanics and surface anatomy: contraction of the transverse part tends to compress the nasal aperture, while the alar part can influence flare or narrowing of the nostril depending on the balance of adjacent elevators. Small muscle, common consequences. Overactivity or asymmetry can contribute to visible alar retraction or dynamic nasal obstruction, and the nasalis is a frequent target in aesthetic injection planning because of its role in “bunny lines” on the nasal dorsum and its proximity to the angular artery and the lateral nasal branches.
