Description
Arising from the radial artery just distal to the elbow crease, the radial recurrent artery is shown coursing proximally along the lateral (radial) side of the proximal forearm (antebrachium), climbing anterior to the radiocapitellar region toward the lateral epicondyle. Its short ascending loop tracks between brachioradialis and the brachialis-biceps tendon complex, remaining lateral to the bicipital aponeurosis and superficial to the anterior capsule of the elbow. Proximally, it approaches the periarticular arterial network and aligns with branches of the profunda brachii and radial collateral pathways around the lateral elbow. Small muscular branches to brachioradialis and extensor carpi radialis longus are typically implied in this territory. Surgeons and interventionalists care about this vessel because it is a consistent contributor to the periarticular anastomosis that maintains perfusion around the elbow when the main brachial or radial trunk is clamped, injured, or harvested. Lateral approaches for radial head fracture fixation, elbow arthroscopy portal placement, and debridement of lateral epicondylitis traverse the same interval where the radial recurrent artery (and its venae comitantes) can complicate exposure. Bleeding here is brisk. The artery’s relationship to the radial nerve branches near the supinator also makes it a useful landmark when teaching the layered anatomy of the lateral elbow.
