Description
Arising from the parotid plexus after the facial nerve (CN VII) exits the stylomastoid foramen, the zygomatic branch courses anterosuperiorly across the lateral face toward the lateral canthus. Fine terminal filaments pass superficial to the masseter and zygomaticus major and minor, then sweep medially over the zygomatic bone to reach the orbicularis oculi and adjacent periorbital musculature. Along the way, the branch sits lateral to the nose and oral commissure, in a plane superficial to the facial expression muscles and deep to where the skin would lie. Muscular landmarks such as temporalis, masseter, orbicularis oris, and platysma provide regional orientation in the head and neck. Functionally, this nerve territory matters because it carries the motor supply that closes the eyelids and supports the blink reflex through orbicularis oculi. Injury to the zygomatic branch, whether from parotidectomy, facelift dissection, zygomatic fracture approaches, or iatrogenic traction near the lateral orbital rim, can leave the patient with lagophthalmos and exposure keratopathy. Small but unforgiving anatomy. The anterior perspective also clarifies where facial nerve branches interlace with the sensory field of the trigeminal nerve (CN V), a frequent source of confusion in teaching motor versus cutaneous innervation around the outer eye. Use this artwork in head and neck anatomy courses to teach the extracranial branching pattern of CN VII and its relationship to the muscles of facial expression, or in ENT and plastic surgery materials when discussing safe planes of dissection around the parotid region and lateral orbit. It also fits well in clinical handouts on Bell palsy patterns and facial reanimation planning when mapping which branches drive eyelid closure.
